2023/24 Restoration

The Timeline of the Restoration

Our restoration of the Native Plant Sanctuary began in March 2023. The following photos will give you an idea of the progress made in 2023-2024. The sanctuary is 160 feet by 60 feet enclosed in a wrought iron fence. Behind the sanctuary is a wetland. The sanctuary is now in maintenance with routine weeding and new plantings. The sanctuary is now beginning the next stage of its use – as a learning lab for students of all ages.

March 2023 – These three photos show the sanctuary prior to our restoration work. The entire sanctuary was covered by Himalayan Blackberries, Morning Glory, Wild Cucumber and other to a lesser degree Nipplewort, Herb Robert, and English Ivy.

April 2023 – The restoration work begins on the sanctuary.

January 2024 – Placing the native plants for the planting

February 2024 – The Native Plant Planting

July 2024 – Mulching the sanctuary.

August 2024 – Building the Trails and Fixing the Gate

Our Volunteers – Thank you to all those who helped make the Native Plant Sanctuary a reality. Over 100 community members came together to remove invasive plants, plant natives, mulch, make and place plant identification signs, and build trails. The Canby Kiwanis stepped up early to provide structure and resources. As the project developed the Canby Garden Club joined the effort by providing leadership, resources, native plants, social media, and marketing. Most exciting is the engagement of Canby High School students who through an enlightened educator is working to carry the project forward with expanded signage, educational materials, and increased native plant diversity.

Summer 2024 – The native plants we planted in February did not disappoint. Here are a few samples of our success.
